What makes a great non-profit board member? Some of the most significant board members started their journey to service with nothing but a passion for the organization and an innate desire to do good. This desire, coupled with certain qualities such as being dedicated and committed to the mission, leading and influencing others, being knowledgeable, and valuing discretion, make board members an asset to a non-profit's success.
Our newest One Summit Board Members have a strong commitment to our cause and are devoted to advancing the organization's mission. They are accomplished individuals who bring with them experiences that will be invaluable to our strategic growth. We are excited to welcome them to the One Summit family!
Two of our board members come to us as former Navy SEALs and current One Summit mentors. James Flatley is an experienced Global Program Manager/Strategist with twelve years of diverse leadership and team-building experience at the nexus of special operations, foreign affairs, and technology. While on active duty as a Navy SEAL officer, from 2014 to 2018, Jim managed various research and development programs at the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. His ability to think both systematically and outside the box led to the implementation of several innovative concepts supporting strategic and operational imperatives.
Andrew Fortmann is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. Andy graduated from Lexington High School and then attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. After ten years of service to the SEAL Teams, Andy attended Harvard's Kennedy School, earning a Mid-Career Master's in Public Administration in 2015. He currently serves as the Director of Leader Development and Education for Naval Special Warfare, leading the community's efforts to maximize its operational leaders' performance.
Dr. Shumi Rawlins, a licensed Psychologist, joins us with fifteen years of clinical work experience supporting active duty service members and their families. She earned her commission in the United States Navy in 2005 and then served in the Reserves. Shumi is also a military spouse and mother. In her role as an embedded psychologist at a Special Operations command, she became highly experienced at recognizing and addressing the outcomes of working in a high-risk environment and teaching strategies for strength and resilience.
The final two members are skilled in the corporate world. Nick Mavro comes to us with over twenty-five years of business experience. He is an accomplished and well-respected team player with a proven track record of driving new business, cultivating long-lasting relationships, and leading the design and execution of successful strategic business strategies. During his career, he has led several corporate diversity, inclusion, and mentoring programs. Currently, Nick is Head of U.S. Institutional at Pictet Asset Management. He is responsible for building and leading business development, consultant relations, and relationship management within the U.S. market.
James Mooney, a CFA charter holder, is a Partner & President of The Baupost Group, a Boston-based investment manager - leading the investment team's day-to-day activities and chairs Baupost's Management Committee. Jim has a B.A. in Political Science from the College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from Georgetown University. A trustee of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the St. Sebastian's School, Jim created and hosts One Summit's most successful fundraiser.
Effective boards ensure that members' skills align with both the organization's needs and their interests. As evidenced above, we are confident our One Summit Board will be even stronger with the addition of these distinguished individuals. We are looking forward to reaching new heights together!
