One Summit’s mission is to help childhood cancer patients build courage, self-confidence, and resilience through experiential learning and mentorship with a U.S. Navy SEAL. Our experiential learning takes place in the form of indoor rock climbing, at a Climb for Courage. Through this exciting, challenging, and safe adventure, we induce individual challenges that empower the children to achieve growth through conquering adversity. The long-lasting Navy SEAL mentors inspire the hope and resilience these little warriors need to continue their fight against cancer.

One Summit was founded by Adam La Reau in 2013. Adam’s inspiration stemmed from his experiences as a Navy SEAL, coupled with his mother’s fight against breast cancer. Adam began volunteering with cancer organizations after his mother lost her battle to cancer in 2004. Adam says “I met a lot of women just like my mother that were just amazingly tough, strong, mentally and physically, and just inspired others.” He continued, “I also saw a lot of young kids battling cancer that didn’t necessarily have the skills to conquer this disease on their own. I thought it was an unfair fight and I wanted to even the odds.” His experiences in the military lead him to believe there was an opportunity for the Navy SEALs to help these kids. Adam says “I served with a lot of amazing men who were incredibly heroic, courageous and resilient.” He recognized the skills embedded in the SEALs were the skills the kids needed to battle this debilitating disease. He decided to bring these two worlds together and create One Summit.
“My mother lost her battle to cancer when she was 58. I found out while serving in Iraq in 2004. In the end, it was her body that gave up, not her mind. I am still inspired by my mother’s strength as well as the strength of the men I served with in the SEAL teams.” – Adam La Reau
